Werner is comforting Bengali as she is being sedated to undergo a root canal procedure by Michael McCullar. At our Tiger Creek Wildlife Refuge every possible precaution is taken to ensure that the animals are well cared for, including the psychological aspects for each of the big cats.

Many rescue groups believe that big cats should not have direct contact with the keepers, handlers and staff. At Tiger Link we believe quite the opposite, while these animals are not pets they require experience handling at various times. No matter how natural their habitats become, these big cats will always be captive, and every consideration should be taken to minimize stress for the resident cats. This prevents the animals from hurting themselves and the keeper.

McCullar has worked on thousands of exotic animals at zoos nationwide and companion animals at clinics throughout the New Orleans area.

McCullar has spoken and taught on numerous occasions including the World Veterinary Dental Congress and the American Association of Zoological Veterinarians. Topics ranged from basic dentistry to endodontics and crown margins. In 1993, he was awarded an NIH grant involving the research on the dietary influence on the dental health of captive primates. He hopes that his compilation of information including “Enamel Dysplasia in Captive Orangutans” will be of significant importance when hand rearing pongids. In his first published work, McCullar contributed the chapter on dentistry in “Medical Management of the Elephant.”

Under the direction of Michael McCullar, Canines Veterinary Dentistry can address advanced veterinary dental issues on site at any clinic, zoo or animal sanctuary with the latest equipment quickly and efficiently to keep the animal’s stress level low.
